Asda and Sainsbury’s merge

At Joalpe we are proud to supplier some of the biggest names in retail with shop equipment and like to keep abreast of the latest industry news. Last week it was announced that two of the UK’s largest supermarkets, Asda and Sainsbury’s are set to merge in a deal estimated to be worth £13 billion. The move will create a group of over 2,800 Asda, Sainsbury’s and Argos outlets with more than 300,000 members of staff.

The merger will mean that the combined forces of the two supermarkets will have a larger market share than Tesco, which is currently the largest operator in the sector. Representatives have said that at this stage there are not any plans to close any Asda or Sainsbury’s stores. However, a target of £500m of savings, which could include introducing Argos branches in some Asda stores could affect some sites.

Sainsbury’s Chief Executive, Mike Coupe, will lead the new network. He has described the merger as a: “transformational opportunity to create a new force in UK retail, which will be more competitive and give customers more of what they want now and in the future.”

Asda’s Chief Executive, Roger Burnley, has also stated that the move is a positive one for buyers who will be have access to a wider ranges of products at more competitive prices. He said: “The combination of Asda and Sainsbury’s into a single retailing group will be great news for Asda customers, allowing us to deliver even lower prices in store and even greater choice.”
