Where to buy your Christmas food this year
Forget the presents, the decorations and the vague promise of snow – everyone knows Christmas is really all about the food. Before you can tuck into your meal, though, there’s a lot of preparation required. First and foremost, there’s the matter of getting all the ingredients bought. With so many supermarkets stocking their shelves with festive treats, getting a perfect turkey and tasty trimmings at the right price is a challenge in itself. Thankfully, Which? have revealed the best places to go this Christmas as voted by over 5,000 shoppers, so filling your shopping basket can be as straightforward as possible.
For many people, turkey is the centrepiece of the Christmas meal. In terms of taste and quality, local turkey farms and specialists were ranked as the best choice, with Lidl’s value for money seeing it rated as the supermarket of choice ahead of Aldi and Iceland.
Ask ten people what the essential Christmas trimmings are and chances are you’ll get ten different answers. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the same is pretty much true for question of which shop to buy them from. For example, farm shops and Aldi scored highly for stuffing, but for chipolatas you’re best heading to a local butcher or Lidl.
Local greengrocers, farmers’ markets and farm shops scored highest for vegetables, including the ever divisive brussels sprout. Aldi and Lidl were again among the best-performing supermarkets, edging ahead of the slightly pricier offerings from Waitrose, M&S and Ocado. Shoppers voted roast potatoes, sprouts, carrots and parsnips as the four most popular Christmas vegetables.
