A huge new retail park is under way in Yorkshire. Axiom is the largest retail, leisure and sports development to be built on an out of town site in England for 20 years. Located just off the M62 in the middle of Yorkshire, it will cover an enormous 106 acres of land once complete. If work is finished on time, the complex will open in 2021.
Described by the developers as a fully covered retail and leisure destination, it will comprise of more than 75 retail, leisure and restaurant units. Amongst those already signed up are big high street names such as Boots, M&S, Next and Primark. It is estimated that the retail park will create 2,000 new FTE jobs once it is open to the public. 2.2 million people live within a 30 minute drive time of the development and an estimated 90,000 cars will pass the site each day whilst travelling on the M62.
According to Axiom’s official website, there will be £39million of private sector investment into nearby facilities including a new Community Stadium for Castleford Tigers Rugby League Club too. Andy Wallhead, Corporate Director of Regeneration and Economic Growth at Wakefield Metropolitan District Council has spoken positively about the benefits the park will bring stating: “Wakefield are proud to be working in partnership with the Axiom team to deliver this significant development including a new home for Castleford Tigers. As a local authority, we have a track record for being forward thinking and innovative. Axiom shares these same values and will become a flagship regeneration project that communities in Wakefield and the Five Towns can be proud of.”
