It appears the July drop in retail spend was just a dip as consumer spending returned to positive growth in August.
According to Visa UK’s Consumer Spending Index, household expenditure jumped 0.4 per cent last month up from a 0.9 per cent drop in July. This is the third month of the last four to see growth.
Reasons for this included the back to school spending and the prolonged mild weather. Clothing and footwear markets saw the best growth run in the past three years with four successive months of growth, only outdone by the food and drink sectors.
The uplift in spend on the high street is great news for Joalpe as more and more people will be using shopping baskets to carry their stuff. With reports having suggested that online shopping was taking over, it is also great to hear that high street outperformed online sales last month, a huge boost for the high street.
